Exercise : Painting with pastels

Exercise : Painting with pastels

I’m still confused about pastels being a drawing or a painting medium, but I’ve found I prefer chalk pastels to oil pastels, mainly because I feel more confident controlling colour with chalk pastels

I chose a local landmark called Barr Beacon for this exercise, I haven’t experimented much with pastels at all.

I had started off with simple sketch, to get a feel for the sense of distance and perspective. At this point, even though a clear day, hardly anything other than greenery can be seen with the naked eye.

As the light faded, the landscape changed entirely, and the greenery disappeared, revealing the road lights and headlights of cars. At this point I changed my view slightly as I had to get into the warmth of my car.

I think this medium particularly suited the subject matter, ( Although I don’t think it has photographed very well) particularly as I had chosen a dark ground to draw on.
