Project: Adding other materials

Exercise: Mixing materials into paint & Exercise: Preparing a textured ground

These exercises really helped me crystallize how I am going to approach my final piece – in so much that I have an indication of the methods I am going to use.

I started off with a ground  of grey blue and attached pieces of paper (in fact a wallpaper sample I had lying about the house. I glued these onto the onto the board using pvc glue in the rough shape of a city skyline. I had been reminded of a trip to London recently where I had taken photos over the Thames with reflections in the water.

I had some pearlescent paint that I mixed with Colbolt blue and added chalk pastel adhered with hairspray.

Somewhat inspired by the previous exercise of splattering paint and feeling a abstract landscape was beginning to emerge I painted a similar scene this time using pieces of stripped up wallpaper and chalk into the painting. The colours were unsuccessful, but I feel that the principle of the exercise i.e feeling more confident about adding other materials into my work did help – certainly this has informed further the use of paper and possibly gold and silver glazes, as in my previous self portrait exercise that I may bring into my final piece.

This isn’t quite the piece I has hoping for but exercise of experimenting techniques has been really helpful.

Preparing a textured ground

I applied guesso on the canvas board thickly and created whirls and patterns and let it dry.

Further to this I tried out several techniques, painting an abstract piece using a prussian blue grey, magenta, and mixing gold leaf and flour. It came out unusually vibrant and cheerful, which isn’t entirely my usual painting style.

This is a technique I will need to think about carefully when using on other paintings.
