Exercise Exploring contrasts

Exercise Exploring contrasts

This exercise involved mixing several colours that are close together on the colotr spectrum. The aim is to notice how the the perception of colour changes when is it laid adjacent to a similar colour on the colur wheel, i.e. the eye find it hard to differentiate between the two colours and cancel each other out.

The same exercise is then done with a opposite colour on the colour wheel, this serves to accentuate the original colour.

The same exercise is repeated with a neutral colour, showing how the colour is accentuated against a neutral back drop.

The affects of contrasting colours were used to creat effects by the impressionists, and in particular, Van Gogh.  A good example would be the contrasting yellow/orange and blue in Van Gogh – Terrasse des Cafés an der Place du Forum in Arles am Abend, 1888:
