Exercise Still life with natural objects

Exercise Still life with natural objects

‘Assemble a group of natural objects, Theses could be highly c loured objects such as fruit or vegetables, more subtly colored vegetables or highly coloured objects that are almost monochrome such as shells, skulls, rock crystals or seed heads. Its best to choose simple forms rather than complex ones for this exercise: just two or three objects will give you enough subject matter.

I chose a still life of fruits: I had them readily available and liked the contrast in colours.

I did an initial sketch of apples; I wasn’t happy about how this would turn out as a painting and changed my mind to a different composition with different coloured fruit:

Learning assessment:

For this exercise I feel my final painting is rather weak, I should have spent more time and more importantly, set up the composition in a different room so there is a greater focal point on light. I feel the overall painting looks rather flat and unexciting.
