Assignment two

Still life finished painting

Still life: Jug with apples, plums and a pear.

I had struggled with the previous still life exercises… I think because of two reasons – I had set up an area to paint in a South facing room (where there was no carpet and fabric fibres to get into my paint) but I had been struggling with the lack of meaningful light and using acrylic paints to speed the exercises up.

I realised that there is no substitute for a North facing room so the light could be clearly seen. I felt I could get a better finish using oil paint so decided to move all my paints and easel into the other room and set up a still life.

I didn’t like the perspective of the low lying table, so ended up stacking two tables on top of each other to get to the correct eye level.

After setting up an arrangement, I did an initial sketch

I left that this arrangement was too crowded, in life, and  looking at a photograph it seemed okay, but the sketch seemed too cramped.

I felt that less is more and took away some of the fruit and set up a more pleasing arrangement.

I prepared a blue ground as the colour of the painting would be predominately warm, and sketched a line drawing:
