What paint can do

Basic paint application getting to know your brushes
The first task is to: Paint a small simple landscape from memory

Two things to consider here –  most of my paintings of late have been large scale in oils, and rarely anything from memory.

I purchased slow drying acrylics for this task; which didn’t seem to be slow drying in the slightest, but I had forgotten how enjoyable it was to work with acrylics.

I decided on painting a field close to my home, quite beautiful and made more incongruous by its close approximation (literally next door) to a massive homebase and a Wal-Mart store within ten meters.

I surprised myself regarding this painting, as normally I’d have used quite a muted pallet and most landscapes I have painted are from a direct reference and stormy, windswept and generally foreboding.  I found myself thinking back to how the field looked in the summer, gold and resplendent with oilseed rape. I’ve got out of my car and walked along this field many times and also it struck me that large swathes of the field showed bald patched of earth, although from only a few meters away it seemed packed tightly with luminous flowers.
Overall, a bit chocolate boxy, but encouraging that clearly I have cheered up somewhat of late, as it isn’t half as miserable as my usual landscapes.
